Assignment 4 - McCrea

The first "Jazz Jam" in a monthly series at the Hall, presented by the Clarice. The event was hosted by professional saxophonist Elijah Balbed and featured trumpeter Brandon Woody. Students could sign up to play with Balbed, Woody, and the house band.

Maximilian Jacobs, a grad student studying the violin, sketches at the Hall during the jam.

The drumset featured a cymbal full of holes, which created dappled light on the hi-hat.

Mike Hawkins on the stand-up bass.

Tommy Holiday on the guitar.

Elijah Balbed watches Brandon Woody improvise on the trumpet.

UMD students Caleb Johnson (left) and Joshua Griffin (right) study music before going up to play.

Junior music education major Abby Jones on saxophone.

Balbed and the house band opened the night with their own set.

Students and professionals play together towards the end of the night. From right to left: student Skye Garrett on keyboard, musician Mike Hawkins on bass, students Landon Stone and Chris Boxall on trumpet and drums, percussionist Jason Walker, student Joshua Griffin on saxophone, grad student Hart Joseph Guonjian-Pettit on trumpet.

Assignment #4, Watson

For this week's assignment, I documented the Korean Student Association and the Taiwanese American Student Association's "Sports Snack Social," which was held on the Washington Quad. While various games of volleyball, spikeball, and jianzi went on, students could indulge in Asian convenience store snacks including yakult, boba mochi, and jelly cups, for a small fee.

Assignment #3, Watson

For this week's assignment, I chose to take portraits of different people across campus using a "side-profile" approach. Nearly all of these encounters were unplanned and spur-of-the-moment, but I tried to include a variety of emotions and/or actions while adhering to my selected portrait style.

Senior Shaylan Ahearn practices her catching as a member of UMD's women's lacrosse team.

Freshman Kaden Burkett works at the front desk of Knight Hall in the morning.

First year graduate Hanyu Li gives directions to a visitor at Stamp Student Union.

Junior Brandon Price works on a demanding assignment in the back of a lecture room within Tawes Hall.

Seniors Abbey Magsakay (left) and Justin Williams (right) share a laugh while working at the main area of Eppley Recreation Center.

As the sun rises, an unnamed construction worker monitors the traffic along Route 1.

Assignment 3 - McCrea

For the portraits assignment, I photographed my teammates on the club water polo team. It's a great group: there's a lot of toughness because of the sport we play, but also a lot of really bubbly personalities. We train hard but also have a lot of fun, and I wanted to capture that.

Claire Auth is protective of her cap number, which is always number four. She wanted to get a photo of the cap, so we did a side profile shot.

Sara Stromberg palms a water polo ball. We were playing with focal length, so I got a few cool photos of my teammates holding the ball out in front of them.

Auth warms up by throwing a ball against the wall at Eppley Natatorium. We wanted to get some action shots, even though we were on land.

Ana Esposito's tattoo, the number seven, is also her cap number in games.

Rose Fernandes and her game face.

I had Esposito tossing the ball up and down for an action shot, but this photo from in between throws was my favorite by far.

Assignment #3, Stephenson

Akshay Bhandari sits on a ledge in College Park, Maryland on Sept. 21, 2022. Bhandari is a junior computer science major from right outside of Newark, New Jersey.

Bhandari smiles right outside of McKeldin Library in College Park, Maryland on Sept. 21, 2022.  He will often be in the library, studying, for hours on end. I caught him after a particularly long study session, and followed him around for his afternoon routine.

Bhandari stands under an arch in College Park, Maryland on Sept. 21, 2022. He decided to come to the University of Maryland for their computer science program, and it wasn't too far from home, because family is important to him.

Bhandari poses in front of a berry bush in College Park, Maryland on Sept. 21, 2022. Bhandari was never confident in front of the camera as a child, but as he began to find himself in high school, his confidence soared — he has made a name for himself at UMD, becoming a familiar face on campus for many.

Bhandari sits in his apartment with a mannequin head. Bhandari has an eclectic and cool sense of style that he has worked on for years, getting more into fashion and culture.

Bhandari looks at himself in the mirror in his apartment bathroom in College Park, Maryland on Sept. 21, 2022. Bhandari said he never got into skincare until a few years ago, but now self-care is what keeps him sane as a busy STEM student.
