Taken in 1997 by Phillipe Kahn of his new born daughter, this is the first ever digital photograph transmitted by cell phone. It is no small statement to say that this image and the technology used to share it changed our lives forever. Look where we are almost 24 years later. We document out lives with our cell phones, sharing images, and videos, to each other through apps like Instagram, SnapChat, TikTok and Facebook. We also document instances of social injustice, like the killing of George Floyd and the storming of the US Capital. Think about how different life wold be if people could not document and share images instantaneously. Photojournalists are increasingly turning to cell phones to disseminate images and videos to their subscribers. Time magazine has used cell phone images on their cover, starting with their 12 FIRSTS issue and most recently for their Time 100 Most Influencial issue.
